駐在を終え、日本へ帰られるMさんとの大切なランチです。 細長いパンと、粒マスタードの混ざった美味しいバター。 It's a farewell lunch with an expatriate who is going back to Japan. This skinny bread and butter with a pinch of sweet mustard taste good as a starter.
ステーキハウスですが、 まずは牡蠣を注文し。。。 At a steak house, we started with Oysters.
周りのビジネスマンたちが大きなステーキを食べているのを横目に、Mさんの勧めであえて「ロブスター・ロール」を注文。この店のロブスター・ロールは美味しいと評判だそうです。 Looking at delicious looking steaks around, we ordered a Lobster Roll which is also a signature dish here.
日本ではあまり馴染みがないですが、これが茹でたロブスター。Lobster is not very common in Japan.
アメリカではロブスターが人気。比較的高価です。値段的には日本のカニとか伊勢エビ（よりは少し安い）の感覚に近い感じです。ニューヨークではロブスターをパンに挟んだ「ロブスター・ロール」を出すお店がたくさんあります。 Lobster seems very popular in the US. The price wise, it's as close as crabs and Japanese spiny lobsters in Japan. In NY, there are quite many restaurants with their lobster rolls as their signature dish.
ロブスターは比較的長生きで１００年くらい生きるものもいるとか。２００９年NYのレストランに来た巨大なロブスターは推定１４０歳で、最終的には海に帰されたそうです。 Lobsters supposedly live as long as 100 years old. A 140-year-old lobster was reunited with the ocean after being liberated from a NY seafood restaurant back in 2009.

ニューヨークは、素敵な出会いが多い街ですが、母国に帰る方もいらっしゃるので、お別れも多いです。Mさんの日本でのご活躍をお祈りしています。各県からいらっしゃる日本の方達と出会えるのも、ニューヨークに住む楽しみの一つです。 You get to meet with great deal of wonderful people here and there are also lots of good byes as many of them eventually go back to their home countries. It's also a pleasure to meet Japanese people from other regions in NY, which we don't have such occasion so often if living in the same town in Japan.

買った魚介類をここで調理してくれるのです。 蒸す、揚げる、ニンニクで炒める、など好みを伝えます。 アルコール類は持ち込み制（ある意味すごくおトクです）。カップ酒の似合いそうな「楽しい大衆食堂」という雰囲気です。蛍光灯だし。。。 after buying seafood, they will cook the seafood for you there in any way you want. It's BYO, you bring your own beverages, beer or wine, anything you like.
グリーク・サラダ（ギリシャ風）。フェタチーズ（これが特徴。羊・山羊の乳で作る）、オリーブ、トマト、キュウリ、玉ねぎなどが入っています。 They have Greek salad there to start with.
キスのフライ。新鮮で美味しいのですが、これに醤油をかけたくなるのが日本人であります（ちゃんと醤油を持って行きました）。塩とオリーブオイルだけで魚を食べるのは物足りないときがあります。 Deep Fried fish. Our Japanese troop brought soy sauce secretly. It's the perfect finishing touch sometimes!
アメリカでは魚介類は高価です。驚くことに、この魚屋さんでは５人でたくさん食べて、一人約１５００円でした。同じ量をマンハッタンのレストランで食べたら、最低でも５千円以上〜１万円はするでしょう。こんなに安く新鮮なシーフードを食べられる場所は貴重です。（４人以上で行くのがお勧めです） It was only $13 each for the huge amounts of seafood. It was very satisfactory and we were all stuffed. This same amount could have been at least $50 to almost $100 at a regular restaurant.
美味しくて追加注文したガーリック・ブレッド。食べきれないほどの量をくれました。 We ordered garlic bread twice as it was so good, then they gave us tons of them.
ちょうど日本女子サッカーの試合が行われていたので、みんなでスポーツバーに立ち寄りました。 We stopped by a bar nearby to watch the Women's World Cup.
スポーツバーは、テレビ画面が複数設置してあり、サッカー、野球などそれぞれ違う試合を見ることができます。 At a sports bar, they usually have several TV screens, so that you can watch a game of your favorite sport.
この試合で日本はベスト８に進出です。 The Japanese team has moved on to the quarterfinals stage. Only 8 teams are left standing.
レストランで外のテーブルに座る食事が楽しい季節（７月に入ると暑くてできない）。しかし、日本から来た人が「なぜニューヨーカーたちは車の多い空気の悪そうな中、わざわざ外で食べるんだ？」と言ってましたが、確かに。。。笑 The best season to eat outside. A friend of mine from Japan once said, it's not really tempting to eat out with lots of cars passing by, especially the air does not seem very clean. That's understudying….
夏の風物詩。アメリカ人はなぜこうもバーベキューが好きなのだろう。。。確かに楽しいけれど。そしてバーベキューはなぜか男性＆お父さんたちの仕事。（もと同僚の写真無許可使用。笑） Why do Americans love barbecuing in summer!? Well, I have to admit I came to like it, too. (using my dear Johnko's photo without his permission :)
NYは多国籍なのでサッカー観戦も人気。（写真はスペイン人たち）アメリカ人の多くは野球、バスケ、フットボールが先に来るようですが。。。 Soccer game is one of the popular sports to watch as NY is the diverse city. Although most of Americans seem to love baseball, basketball and American football first.
結婚式シーズンでもあります。ロングアイランドなどでの郊外の式も人気です。（この式は海側からボートに乗った新郎新婦が会場に着く、という演出でありました） It's also a beautiful wedding season. It's popular to have a party in the suburbs. The couple, my dear friends, arrived by a boat to the venue !
新婦の親友たち。お揃いのドレスは各自が式の前に寸法を測りに行き、自費でドレスを揃えるのが普通です。アメリカの結婚式はご祝儀は日本ほどかかりませんが、このように友人代表たち（Bridesmaid ブライズメイド）となるとドレス代がかかります。 Bride's best friends, called "Bridesmaid". Each person will prepare the matching dress on her own. They look truly beautiful together.

プラザ・ホテル。地下のフードコートはカジュアルで洒落た店がたくさんあります。ニューヨークではあまり売ってない「モンブラン」もここのケーキ屋「Lady M」で入手可能。（ミルクレープも人気） 軽いランチや、紅茶を飲みながらのお菓子、キャビア＆シャンパーニュで一杯など、楽しみ方がたくさんあります。 Plaza Hotel. It's fun to walk around at the food court downstairs. You can have just tea, coffee with sweets, light lunch/brunch or enjoy a glass of Champagne.
タイム・ワーナービルで買い物して帰ります。Shopping at Time Warner Building…. 地下にはホールフーズ、各階にきれいなトイレもあります。（これ重要）
この辺りはカフェも多く、夏は特にお勧めのエリアです。 There are lots of nice cafes and restaurants in this area, highly recommended especially in summer time !
やっとNYに春がやってきました。快晴が続いています。 Spring has finally come! It's been nice and sunny in NY.
日本ではゴールデンウィークとあって、たくさんの方たちがNYにやってきました。一週間、本業の人材紹介＆ヘッドハンティング業務を休んで、通訳の仕事で大忙しです。 As it's a "Golden Week" in Japan, which is the longest vacation period of the year, lots of Japanese traveled to NY last week. I had a busy week as an interpreter to help/attend some groups, barely had time for recruiting candidates.
国連での平和関連の行事へ出席するために、長崎から５年ぶりに被爆者の方たち、県と市の職員の方々がいらっしゃいました。ユニオン・スクエアーから、国連まで平和ウォークを行いました。 Atomic bomb survivors came from Nagasaki to attend the events at the UN. They had a peace-walk, continued marching from Union Square to the UN.
５年前にNYでお会いした方たちも多く、嬉しい再会でした。国連での行事の他、学校を尋ねて被爆体験を話されたり、精力的に活動されていました。 It was a very nice re-union as I had met many of them 5 years ago. They attended peace-related events at the UN and also visited some schools to share the stories of the day that the atomic bomb was dropped in Nagasaki in 1945.

忙しい合間、息抜きにヤンキース球場へ。野球ファンの男性陣が興奮していました。連れて行くことができて良かったです。 During the busy week, some of us went to Yankee's Stadium to relax. Some of the guys in the group were so ecstatic being there.
後半は長崎市長もNY入りされました。長崎の歴史と原爆について、とてもわかりやすくお話しされました。 The Mayor of Nagasaki also arrived in NY. He talked about a history of Nagasaki and also its tragic history of atomic bomb.
さて、今度は富山県からのゲストです。高校時代の同級生２人組。毎年一緒に旅行されるのだとか。NYで富山県の方と出会うのは初めてです。 Now, I had 2 nice guests from Toyama prefecture. They were high school friends and plan a trip together every year.
とても仲良しで明るいお二人。ずっと笑いっぱなしでした。
３人でエンパイアステートビルの屋上へ。夜景も良いけど、昼の景色も壮観です。 We went to the top of Empire State Building. Its night view is popular, although the day time view also looks really nice and spectacular.
NYの思い出に、少し贅沢なブランチ。マンダリン・オリエンタルホテルにあるレストランにて、シャンパーニュで乾杯。店の方も親切で、眺めの良い席を用意してくれました。 The last day, we had a luxurious brunch at Mandarin Oriental Hotel. We had a toast with French Champagne with a gorgeous view of the city. The staff there were all very kind.

１週間最後の締めくくりは大切な結婚式の通訳でした。新郎はNY在住のアメリカ人、新婦は日本人で、名古屋から親族やお友達２０名が来られました。洒落たレストランを貸し切り、笑顔で一杯の暖かい結婚式でした。皆とても楽しそうでした。 The last day of the week was a nice wedding party. The groom is American and the bride is Japanese. Almost 20 of her family and friends flew in from Japan. It was a very sweet, heart-warming party filled with lots of happiness and smile of everyone !
日本から来られた、たくさんの方達に出会えて、本当に幸せな一週間でした。これからも日本からいらっしゃる方達と出会い、少しでもお役に立てたら嬉しいです! I was so grateful and feel honored to have met such wonderful people from Japan during the week. I'm looking forward to meeting with many new friends around the globe !
長崎の同級生から「地元（諌早）の友人がNYへ行くから力になってあげて」と連絡がありました。お母さんと娘さんの親子２人旅だそうです。 High school friend in hometown Nagasaki asked me to hep her friends (mother and daughter) who were planning to visit NY.

同じ地元から来るなんて、他人事とは思えません！ They're coming from my hometown, of course, I want to help them !!
According to the daughter, her mom owned a jazz bar for many years. It was the mother's wildest dream to go to jazz bars in NY, so her daughter had decided to take her to NY. It'll be the mom's very first time in the US.
ジャズは詳しくないので、プロのミュージシャンやジャズ通の方たちなど、いろいろな層から情報をもらいました。 As I am not so familiar with Jazz, I asked jazz musician friends for recommendations.

到着した日、お２人に会いにホテルへ行きました。お話してビックリ。お母さんのジャズバーは私も学生時代に行ったことのあるお店でした。明るくて話の楽しいママさんの記憶がよみがえってきました。２０年を経て、あのママにNYで再会できるとは感慨深いです。 I went to see them at a hotel when they arrived. I've realized I had been to the mother's jazz bar when I was in college. The memory of her sitting at the counter table, talking about jazz came back vividly. It's amazing we had a nice reunion after 20 years in NY!
数日間の短い滞在でしたが、お２人は昔ながらの古いバーや比較的新しい場所に行ったりといろいろ試され、ジャズ通のお母さんもなかなか満足されていたようです。 It was a very short stay, but they went to as many different jazz bars (traditional old ones and new ones) as possible and the mother who knows a lot about jazz seemed to be very happy with the results.

「週末は予約を取る！」 後悔したのは、週末だったのに「予約を取る」という機転が利かなかったこと。人気の店は週末ほとんど予約が取れませんでした。予約はネット上か電話ですが、やはり英語が必須です。 The biggest mistake I made was that I did not make any reservation for them during the busy weekend ! Most of the popular jazz bars like these, it was almost impossible to get a reservation.
「人気スポット」 今回感じたのは、「リンカーンセンタージャズ」がプロも含め人気が高かったこと。舞台の背景がガラス張りで景色が良いことも好評です。季節によっては夕焼けから夜景への変化も楽しめますね。ミュージシャンの質も高いようで、お母さんも満足していらっしゃいました。ジャズにさほど興味の無い方でも一杯飲みながら楽しめそうな場所です。 Lincoln Center Jazz seems to be a very popular spot. They have a beautiful view of Central Park in the back and the musicians quality is very high. Even if you are not so crazy about jazz music, this could be a very good place to enjoy music with a glass of wine.

最後の日、３人でご飯を食べました。お母さんが万遍の笑顔で「あ〜！楽しい旅行やった〜！」とおっしゃっていました。 We had dinner on the last day. The mother seemed very happy and satisfied with the NY trip.
別れ際、娘さんが可愛い花束を下さいました。お母さんが「中に手紙ば入れたけん落とさんごとね」とおっしゃいました。私が立ち去るのをずっと見送っていらっしゃいました。名残惜しく寂しかったです。 They gave me a cute bouquet after dinner. The mother said "there is a letter inside, don't drop it". She had a big smile on her face and they were both seeing me till they couldn't see me anymore. I felt a little sad saying good by to them…
I opened the letter at home. The mother had put $100 bill (in Japanese yen) in it, just like my parents or grandma gave me allowance to buy something. She said she wanted to give me something but couldn't think of any good idea so she decided to give me some money. It was a heart warming gift.

ガーナ出身のもと同僚がガーナ料理を作ってくれました。 My friend Lydia made traditional food from her home country, Ghana.
ガーナと聞くとチョコレートが浮かびますが、これはガーナで売られているチョコ。滑らかなチョコに慣れていると、これは少しぽそぽそしてなんとも微妙です。 In Japan, Ghana is well-known by its chocolate. It's actually the largest producer of cocoa in the world as of 2015.
ガーナの民族衣装や布はこんな感じです。元気でカラフルな色使い。 Ghanaian traditional clothes and fabrics are very colorful and vivid !
代表的なガーナ料理の１つに、ピーナッツをつぶしたスープやシチューがあります。こくがあって美味しいです。 One of their traditional dish is stew/soup made with peanuts. They are very rich and creamy.
魚（鯛）にトマトソースがかかっていました。日本では大根おろし＆しょう油かな。。 Fish with delicious tomato sauce. In Japan, we often put shredded Daikon radish and soy sauce on the fish.
「フーフー」FU FU フーフーは蒸したキャッサバ芋やプランテーン（野菜バナナ）を杵でついて、まさに「お餅」のようなもの（下の白い物体）。これに好みのスープと肉（魚）を入れて食べます。スープはナッツ系、魚、トマトベースなど。 FuFu (FooFoo) is often made by cassava flour, yams or cooking plantains, pounded into a dough-like consistency. FuFu can be dipped into an accompanying soup or sauce with meat or fish.
ディナーは以下のような感じでした。ガーナでは米、ヤム芋、キャッサバ芋、プランテーン（野菜バナナ）、コーン、豆類などの主食に、鶏、牛、ヤギ、羊肉など。シーフードも豊富でタコもイカも食べます。スパイスも多く使い、全体的に赤っぽい色の料理が多い印象です。 Assorted Ghanaian dish. Rice, yam, plantain, taro, corn, beans. Many different kinds of meat and seafood. Ghanaian stews and soups are sophisticated with liberal and delicate use of exotic ingredients, a wide variety of flavors, spices and textures.
どの国もそうですが、お母さんの手作りご飯のような素朴で美味しい、とても温かいお料理でした。 It was a very warm, mother's cooking feeling with very fresh ingredients just like every other country's food. It's such a universal feeling !
ブータン出身の友人の結婚式に行きました。 I had an opportunity to attend a friend's Bhutanese wedding party.
ブータンは人口約７０万人の小さな国。NY在住のブータン人は少ないので、結婚式はとても貴重な経験です。 Bhutan's population is estimated as 770,000 people, and NY's Bhutanese community is small. Therefore, this opportunity is very precious.
出席者の多くが、ブータンの民族衣装を着ていました。色使いがとても美しいです。 Most of the guests were wearing Bhutanese costumes. They were all truly beautiful and colorful.
新郎新婦 (Bride and Groom)
男性の民族衣装は「ゴ」といい、襟元が着物と似ています。みんな色合いも模様も違います。 Men wear a robe called a "GHO", similar to Kimono at the collar. They are all different in colors and patterns.
女性は色とりどり、とても斬新な色合わせです。 Women wear colorful blouses and an ankle-length dress. The combinations of the colors are in a way very unconventional and beautiful.
結婚式では「バター茶」が頻繁に配られていました。一見ミルクティーですが、初めて飲む人はビックリ！「塩」が入っているので「しょっぱい」のです。日本人にとっては初めての味かもしれません。 They were serving a lot of "Butter Tea" which looks/smells like a milk tea, although it will surprise you with an unexpected taste, it's "salty"!
新婦がネパール出身だったので、お色直しはネパールの衣装でした。こちらの女性たちも色鮮やかです。 The bride is from Nepal, so she also wore a Nepalese dress. Their dresses are truly gorgeous !
結婚式はどの国も同じ、幸せいっぱいの空気があふれていて良いものですね！皆さん、お幸せに！！ Wedding parties are always filled with happiness. May happiness will be always with you!
